We believe responsible tourism means leaving places better than we found them. Tamraght has been our home and our greatest teacher. Sustainability is not a marketing checkbox for us — it is woven into the Berber way of life we are privileged to share with every guest who walks through our riad door.
The Ocean
Every wave we ride is borrowed from future surfers and the marine life that calls the Atlantic home.
Plastic-Free Riad
We eliminated single-use plastic water bottles in 2023. Filtered still and sparkling water stations are located throughout the riad — bring your own bottle or borrow one of ours.
Saturday Beach Cleans
Every Saturday morning, guests and staff walk Tamraght beach with gloves and bags. In 2025, we removed over 340 kg of plastic and marine debris from our local stretch of coast.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Only mineral, reef-safe sunscreen is available in our shop and recommended to guests. Oxybenzone and octinoxate — known coral bleaching agents — are not welcome in Taghazout Bay waters.
Biodegradable Surf Wax
Our rented boards are waxed with natural, plant-based surf wax. Better for the reef. Still holds your feet.
Every surf session includes a short ocean ecology briefing: reading rip currents, identifying the reef below, and understanding why we protect it.
The Community
We are guests in Tamraght. The community’s trust is the foundation everything else rests on.
Local Hiring First
8 out of 10 Tama Surf staff members are from Tamraght or Taghazout village. We pay above the regional market rate and provide surf coaching training for local staff who want to progress.
Berber Artisan Sourcing
Every rug, lantern, pottery piece, and piece of carved cedar in the riad was sourced from Berber artisans in the Souss-Massa region. We do not use generic import furniture.
Daily Market Shopping
Our chef shops the Tamraght and Taghazout souks every morning. No supermarket bulk-buy. Direct from the farmers and fishermen who supply our table.
School Fund Donation
1% of every weekly package booking is donated to the Tamraght village school fund, supporting equipment and extracurricular activities for local children.
The Riad
Solar Hot Water
Our rooftop solar thermal panels cover 80%+ of the riad’s hot water demand year-round. Morocco’s 300 days of Atlantic sunshine are not wasted.
Tadelakt Walls
Traditional Moroccan lime plaster (tadelakt) throughout the riad is naturally humidity-regulating and anti-mould — requiring no chemical treatments and lasting for generations.
Towel & Linen Policy
Towels and bed linen are washed only on request or between guests. This single policy saves approximately 3,000 litres of water per week.
LED Throughout & Composting
All lighting is LED. Food waste is composted and contributed to a local community garden project in Tamraght Oufella.
Our Food
Our table reflects the Souss-Massa valley at its seasonal best.
- Moroccan breakfasts sourced from local farms: argan oil, honey, fresh-pressed olives, seasonal fruit.
- Tagines made with local seasonal vegetables — no imported out-of-season produce.
- Vegetarian and vegan options always available, never an afterthought.
- Surplus food donated to neighbours — a zero food-waste policy in practice since 2022.
- No imported bottled water, ever.
Surf Coaching Ethics
- We follow ISA (International Surfing Association) ocean safety and environmental guidelines.
- We teach Leave No Trace principles in every session: no wax in the channel, no littering, no disturbing marine life.
- We never coach in protected marine areas or restricted zones.
- Our 1:6 coach-to-guest ratio limits crowding and environmental footprint in the line-up.
- Wetsuit and board hire reduces the need for guests to fly with heavy equipment, cutting aviation cargo weight.
Our Commitment to You
We commit to updating this Sustainability Pledge annually, publishing what we have achieved and, honestly, what we have not yet managed. Greenwashing helps nobody. If something on this page is aspirational rather than achieved, we will say so. We welcome guest feedback — if you spot something we can do better, please tell us.
Every guest who chooses Tama Surf over a resort becomes part of this story. The Atlantic gives us the gift of its waves. Giving back is the least we can do.
